Service Trip to Asheville for Hurricane Relief

Saturday, March 29, 2025 29 Adar 5785

12:00 PM - 10:00 PM 4 days afterAsheville, NC

Come do some good with us!

We're going to Asheville/Hendersonville North Carolina to help rebuild after Hurricane Helene.

We leave from Reagan National Airport (DCA) March 29th and return from Asheville (AVL) on April 2nd. These will be full, busy, active days. Expect to work hard and be tired at the end of each day.

Volunteers can be as young as 16, but they should be ready and able to work. Can they responsibly and reliably use a power tool?

What is the price of the trip?

With thanks to a generous donation from the Moses Mitzvah Day fund to help offset part of the cost of the trip, BHC is covering our group transportation and food in Asheville.  Participants are financially responsible for flights and food outside of our planned schedule.

The round trip cost for flights are $320min Basic Economy, and the cost for double occupancy hotel rooms is$ 75 per person per night.. We have already reserved a block of double occupancy hotel rooms, and if you don't want to share a room you won't have to.

BHC has reserved a van to transport us directly from the airport and to the work site each day.

I'm sure you're curious about the food! While breakfast is included with the hotel, we plan to make brown bag lunches for workdays, and to go out together for dinner. Again, with much thanks to the Moses Mitzvah Day

We ask for a $75 deposit below to save your spot.

What do I need to know?

  • We are partnering with NECHAMA, a Jewish organization that provides disaster relief.
  • NECHAMA will provide all tools including training and protective gear, plus snacks and water during the workday.

What would a typical workday be like?

  • We will depart from the lobby at 8 am for our workday, the hotel includes breakfast, but you should be fed and ready to head to the site by 8 am.
  • We arrive on site at 8:30 or 9am, our workday ends between 2-4 pm depending on various factors
  • Work sites can be anywhere from a 15 - 60 minute drive from the hotel
  • Sometimes there are no bathrooms, in which case breaks every 90 minutes or so may include a bathroom run
  • Breakfast is included with the hotel, we will pack brown bag lunches, and eat dinner together around Asheville

What should I pack?

  • Weather should be in the 60s during the day, and down to the 40s at night.
  • For the work day you should dress for house painting. Close toed shoes are required. Work boots preferred, sneakers OK. Long pants are strongly encouraged.
  • Be sure to pack some clothes you would be comfortable wearing to dinner after the workday. We don't plan on anything too fancy, but want you to have the chance to explore.

You're ready to sign up?! Great!

Step 1: Let us know you are coming below! The $75 fee will go towards a double room. Room rates are $150 a night. If you're coming with a friend, let us know in the notes below so we can be sure you are together.

  • *If you are looking to come and stay in your own room, let us know and we will give you the booking information for a single room.

Step 2: Book your flight! We highly encourage the only direct flight on any airline from our area to the destination on our travel days.  American Airlines only direct flight from DCA to Asheville.

  • Return on 7:58 pm on April 2nd, Flight AA5512 (AVL-DCA)
  • Please book your own flight as soon as possible and send us your flight confirmation so we know it's official!

Step 3: Invite Your Friends! The more the merrier! We hope to provide a lot of relief on this trip and would love some hardworking friends who can work during the day, and have a fun time exploring at night!

We hope to see you there,
