Still Life’ is a series of classes concerning three Jewish women artists whose life and work was shaped by the Holocaust. Charlotte Salomon, Friedl Dicker Brandeis and Esther Lurie were amazing documentarians who used art to record their stories. In this class, we will explore common techniques and themes that weave their way through the lives and work of these three artists. And finally we will look at their legacies.
Karen Webber is a performance, teaching and liturgical artist who crafts music/theatre pieces for use in Zoom rooms, senior centers and on the bimah. Ordained as a Cantor by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1990, Karen was awarded a Creativity grant (2022) and a Folklife grant (2023) by the Maryland State Arts Council. Her poems, rituals and essays appear in print and online including in Lilith Magazine and Prophetic Voices: a Haftarah commentary published by CCAR Press (2023).
*This is a three part class.
